Sawangan Beach (also called Pantai Geger Sawangan or Nikko Beach) is a hidden gem on Bali’s Bukit Peninsula. Located in the Nusa Dua area of South Bali, it’s known for soft white sand, clear blue water and a relaxed, uncrowded atmosphere. notes that Sawangan’s off-the-beaten-path setting means you’ll mostly find hotel guests and surfers here. Visitors love sunbathing on the beach and feasting on freshly caught seafood. For a unique experience, the adjacent Hilton Bali Resort even offers camel rides along the shore.

Sawangan Beach sits in Desa Peminge, South Kuta (Badung), about 3 km from the Nusa Dua tourism complex. It’s directly across from the Hilton Bali Resort (formerly the Nikko Bali Hotel). From anywhere on Bali, the easiest way to reach Sawangan is by taxi or ride-hailing (Gojek/Grab). Travelers commonly catch a Gojek from the airport or nearby towns like Kuta, Seminyak and even Uluwatu. Once you arrive at the Hilton’s parking area, follow the small side road or use the free shuttle down to the beach. (Private cars cannot drive onto the sand; a donation box is available for the shuttle ride.)

Beach Highlights & Activities

Sawangan’s clean sand and clear, calm sea make it a great place to relax and play. Here are some top things to do at Sawangan Beach:

  • Sunbathe & Relax: The quiet white-sand shore is perfect for soaking up the sun. There are no loud beach clubs here, just gentle waves and tropical breeze.

  • Swim & Water Sports: The shallow blue water is often calm enough for swimming and paddleboarding. (The beach’s FAQ even confirms, “The beach has calm waters, making it perfect for swimming,” though it’s wise to check the tide conditions.)

  • Surfing: Sawangan can offer great surf when the waves are up. Experienced surfers will find solid swells, but take care, warns that currents can become strong in this area.

  • Stand-Up Paddleboarding: You can rent SUP boards to glide along the gentle shore, enjoying the scenery.

  • Camel Rides: Don’t miss the novelty of riding a camel on the beach. (The Hilton resort rents camels right on Sawangan, a fun photo op for families and couples.)

  • Dining: Sample fresh seafood at nearby eateries. A short walk leads to the upscale Beach Grill at The Ritz-Carlton Bali for gourmet fish dishes, or to humble local spots like Warung Nelayan Sawangan Beach Cafe for affordable grilled specialties.

  • Shopping & Spa: Small souvenir stalls line the path down to the sand. You can buy hats, clothes or beach accessories as you arrive. On the beach itself, local vendors offer cold drinks and even on-the-spot massages (a relaxing treat after sunbathing).

  • Nearby Beaches: Sawangan is just south of Geger Beach, another long white-sand bay ideal for families (its sheltered shallow waters are perfect for young children). Walking north along the coast brings you to Geger Beach and its adjacent temple, Pura Geger Dalem Pemutih.

Dining & Amenities

Sawangan’s public beach area is very small, so there are no restaurants right at the sand. However, a short drive or walk brings you to several options: The Beach Grill (Ritz-Carlton Bali) offers fine dining on ocean-view terrace. Just across the road, Koral Restaurant features an underwater aquarium dining room. For local flavor, Warung Nelayan Sawangan Beach Cafe (at the west end of Sawangan) serves inexpensive fish and snacks popular with locals. RAMAI Coffee Eat Repeat (a cozy café) is also nearby for breakfast or a coffee break. Most other shops, spas and convenience stores are found up at the Hilton or in central Nusa Dua; be prepared to bring cash (in rupiah) for beachside stalls.

Traveler Tips

  • Arrive Early: The beach is much quieter in the morning, and parking is easier if you get there early. Mornings also mean fewer crowds in your photos and cooler temperatures.

  • Dry Season (April–October): Plan your trip in the dry months for sunny skies and generally gentler seas. (The wet season can bring rougher waves and occasional rain.)

  • Park at Hilton: If driving, leave your car or motorbike in the Hilton Bali Resort lot. From there, you walk a short ramp or ride the complimentary shuttle to the beach. (There is a small donation box for the shuttle.)

  • Entrance Fee: A nominal fee of about IDR 15,000 per person is collected at Sawangan Beach (roughly US$1). If you need parking for your vehicle, that is an additional small charge.

  • Stay Protected: There’s very little natural shade on the public beach, so bring sunscreen, a hat and water. Also, always swim with caution, check tide and surf conditions before wading in.

  • Use Ride-Share: To avoid parking hassles, consider a Gojek/Grab from your hotel. It’s cheap and drops you directly at the Hilton entrance.

Nearby Attractions

Sawangan Beach makes a great side-trip while exploring Bali’s south coast. Just up the road is Geger Beach, a long, tranquil bay with shallow, family-friendly water. Overlooking Geger is Pura Geger Dalem Pemutih, a scenic cliff-top temple well worth a visit. To the east are other Nusa Dua beaches (like Nusa Dua Beach and Pandawa Beach) and cultural sites. For example, Pura Batu Belig is a beach shrine nearby, and the famous Uluwatu Temple is only a 15–20 minute drive southwest. Exploring these spots gives you the full Bukit Peninsula experience, from peaceful coves like Sawangan to Bali’s legendary temple views.
